As the economic growth and development pulse in rural Manitoba continues to beat strong, the Rural Manitoba Economic Development Corporation (RMED) is set to release its 2023/24 Rural Manitoba Economic Development Survey Report. This report, one of RMED’s many initiatives to support and advance rural prosperity , will be available for download soon, offering invaluable insights into the economic development activities in rural Manitoba.
The RMED Survey Report is an annual publication that analyzes economic development efforts, challenges, and opportunities in rural Manitoba. Conducted from December 7, 2023, to February 26, 2024, this year’s survey gathered responses from a diverse group of stakeholders, including Economic Development Officers (EDOs), Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs), local Chambers of Commerce, Community Futures organizations, municipal staff, elected officials, and not-for-profit organizations. The survey received 72 valid responses, capturing a broad spectrum of perspectives and insights.

- Economic Development Activities: The report details various initiatives undertaken by municipalities, such as business retention, expansion, and attraction activities. It also covers experiences in economic development and the effectiveness of economic development plans or strategies.

- Performance Measurement: While some municipalities have implemented performance measurement strategies, many still operate reactively, lacking formalized plans. The report emphasizes the importance of proactive monitoring and evaluation in enhancing economic development efforts.
- Challenges and Resilience: The survey identifies a lack of external support as a significant barrier to economic development. However, many municipalities have demonstrated resilience, with 46% showing some degree of resilience to economic fluctuations.
